PIERRA MENTA INSIDE - DAY 3

Another Battle on the Pierra Menta

Sun is back on this 3rd stage of Pierra Menta and the athletes enjoyed sleeping in today, start is postponed to 8 am!

Off to a flying start they set off for the first climb of the day towards Cote 1900. At the top, Kilian Jornet and Jakob Herrman come first, Michele Boscacci and Robert Antonioli follow 38 seconds after, William Bon Mardion and Xavier Gachet are 1 minute behind. In the women’s race, Emelie Forsberg and Laetitia Roux run the show on this first ascent in front of the general ranking leaders, Axelle Mollaret and Katia Tomatis.

The athletes then go from downhill to small ascents in direction of today’s principal difficulty: “La Bosse”, a climb to Roche Plane where they put the skins on for 1106m of positive elevation straight. In this climb the rankings stay the same but the gaps get deeper, Herrman and Jornet are 2’30 in front of Antonioli and Boscacci and 4 minutes in front of the Areches guys Bon Mardion and Gachet.

For the remainder of the race, technical manipulations link up and in spite of a clear advantage for the Italian pair in this domain, the Catalan/Austrian duo increase their lead, 3’55 minutes on their followers before the last downhill. Our local athletes and proud representatives of the Factory Team Xavier Gachet and William Bon Mardion will simply be out of luck for the rest of the race, William will have to change skis 2 times. Despite these unlucky events, the Areches duo keeps its 3rd place overall.

No surprises in the women race, the powerful Axelle Mollaret and Katia Tomatis win this stage and deepen the gap with the challengers Laetita Roux-Emelie Forsberg in the general rankings: +15 minutes
