Pierra Menta 2017 (2/4): Highlights

ARÊCHES-BEAUFORT (Fr.)  Conditions were not close to be good this morning. But getting up to the top of a mountain always is – and this did not prevent our athletes to shine on this second stage of the 32nd Pierra Menta.

THE STAGE OF THE DAY

A French-Italian romance spoiled by some Catalan troublemaker

From the very first few meters, the most serious contenders for the title started the battle that would last until the finish line. Early in the race, Alexis Sévennec alongside duo partner Kilian Jornet quickly dropped the hammer to put themselves in front of the pack with leaders Matteo Eydallin & Damiano Lenzi before attacking the first two difficulties of the day: the Bouchet (700 meters of elevation gain), followed by the Cuvy (700 meters of elevation gain too). Also in the pack in third position, William Bon Mardion & Xavier Gachet. The order kind of staid the same until the Bonnets Rouges (400 meters of elevation gain), from where Matteo and Damiano rushed to finish line to make the gap between them and Alexis and Kilian even more comfortable. In third position, Valentin Favre and Filippo Barrazuol.

Matteo and Damiano are still first in the general ranking, followed by Kilian and Alexis (+ 05’57) and Nadir Maguet & Michele Boscacci (+ 11’15). Xavier Gachet & William Bon Mardion are currently in sixth position (+ 16’08).

Emelie and Laetitia on the top, Axelle and Lorna not too far behind

On the women’s side, Laetitia Roux and Emelie Forsberg had the ambition to make every one forget about their second place from the day before. From the very beginning, the explosive duo rushed in front to never really be worried by the rest of the field. Both of them crossed the line 8 minutes prior to Switzerland’s duo Jennifer Fletcher and Séverine Pont-Combe and 10 minutes before Axelle Mollaret & Lorna Bonnel who can still go for a hard-to-earn second place and why not hope for a stage victory.

Two stages down, two more to go.

THE FACT OF THE DAY

The technical issues that prevented the locals William Bon Mardion and Xavier Gachet from playing with the front of the pack despite an encouraging start that would eventually lead them to the podium.

THE ATHLETE OF THE DAY

Factory Team’s own Matteo Eydallin is the real master of this competition. Two stages, two victories and quite a comfortable lead in the general ranking. It is the Comedia Dell’Arte we are attending.
