HOW TO PREPARE YOUR SKI TRIPOUR ADVICE TO BE PREPARED FOR YOUR NEXT SKI TRIP

You are passionate about skiing; open spaces and you have the taste of adventure? You want to go on a ski trip soon? Let’s discover today our tips to prepare the best your ski trip!

WHERE TO GO?

Japan is a destination where many enthusiasts go for a ski trip. The most popular resorts are Niseko, Sapporo Teine, Hokkaido or Kagura. Another interesting destination is Georgia, where you can ski at the Great Cause of the East (Ski Resort Gudauri in the East or Mestia in the West) or the Petit Causase (Bakuriani in the East or Goderzi in the East). You can also visit one of the French massifs: the Alps (Col d'Argentière, Arolla, La Grave, Chamonix-Zermatt...) or the Pyrenees (Cirque de Gavarnie, Puig de Pam ...). Other interesting destinations are in Norway in the Jotunheimen Massif, in Panticosa in Spain or in the Troll Peninsula in Iceland.

WHEN TO GO?

Choosing the dates of your stay is a very important step. In Japan, for example, resorts are usually open from December to April, but it is best to avoid high season (mid-January to late February) to avoid the world. In Georgia, the best time to combine good snow with few people is from mid-January to mid-February.

WHAT MEANS OF TRANSPORT?

Depending on your destination, you can leave with your own vehicle or fly. If you decide to opt for the second option, carefully choose the company you will be traveling with. Indeed, some have significant additional costs for special luggage (skis for example).

WHERE TO STAY?

In most tourist destinations, the accommodations are not lacking: hotels, homestay rooms, GuestHouse ... Remember to book your nights before your departure so as not to have any nasty surprises.

WHAT EQUIPMENT TO PROVIDE?

It is often possible to rent equipment on site (skis, shoes, outfits), especially in the most popular tourist resorts. Nevertheless, it may be worthwhile to bring your own material: this will save you money and use material you are sure of and know by heart. Remember to choose the width of your skates: in Japan, for example, you need to plan a big skate for ski touring in the best conditions. Do not hesitate to consult the article "Choose your equipment for ski touring" to discover all our tips for choosing your skis according to your level!

WHAT TO WEAR?

Depending on the destination, temperatures can be icy (up to -20 ° C or -30 ° C) and the wind is very present. Remember to take a technical jacket and a big down jacket in addition to your usual outfit (mountain pants, underwear and technical tights, socks and warm gloves ...). Feel free to wear a first technical layer and a second thermal and breathable.

WHAT DIET?

Often, restaurants are present. Depending on the region, each meal can quickly become a taste discovery and restaurant hosts do not always speak English very well. For people with allergies or special diets, plan to write it down and translate it into the local language before you leave.

WHAT TO PUT IN HIS BAG?

  • Helmet and ski mask (anti-fog and anti-UV)
  • Choker and hat, even hood
  • DVA (Avalanche Victim Detector), probe, ABS bag and headlamp are highly recommended
  • Pharmacy kit (especially for frostbite) and survival blanket
  • Sunscreen, lip stick and "cold cream" (face cream against the cold to avoid skin that peels quickly)
  • Isothermal bottle
  • Translation guide in the language of the country of your destination
  • A map of roads and tracks (to buy before departure: this avoids unpleasant surprises such as not being able to decipher the language or not being able to find your way if you use your phone as a map and it no longer has battery)
  • Anticipate cash for payments
  • To go on ski touring: your seal skins!
  • A waterproof pouch
  • Depending on the technical difficulty of your hikes: crampons, ice ax, harness, knives ...

AND IF I GO FOR A RAID SEVERAL DAYS?

Remember to bring your stove, a roller lighter, a sleeping bag, a thermos ..

The French license does not work in all countries. In Japan, for example, it is necessary to make an official translation so that it is valid. Think about anticipating this formality!
